There were two major Canada Day events in Terrace on Monday. The 4th Annual Terrace Professional Firefighters Pancake Breakfast in the morning, which was a huge success. Then, beginning at noon, the Picnic in the Park at Heritage Park Museum. This event too, was well attended.

Remembrance Day 2001 in Terrace was much the same as it has always been; an important reminder of the sacrifice six decades ago and how lucky we are to live in a free country. There was one difference this year, however, the weather, which, while typically wet, was untypically mild.

Problem number one was the weather. A deluge overnight Sunday turned the Christy Park parking lot into Christy River, and soccer pitches into Christy Slough. The rain eased a bit on Tuesday, but only enough to turn the river into a creek. And the grass didn't dry out a bit.

A Veritas School grade seven class, taught by Glen Palahicky, took time during their Monday lunch hour to walk from their school to city hall to remember all those affected by the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on New York City and Washington D.C.

A fire at the Willows Apartments for seniors at about 3:11 this afternoon resulted in little fire damage but a lot of smoke damage to one suite on the ground floor. The smell of burned plastic permeates the hallways in all three levels of the building.

The Northern TaeKwon-Do Acadamey is holding a garage sale at 4818B Highway 16W on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. that has much more to offer than your average garage sale. There's the usual household items, of course, but in addition there's also a bake sale, barbequed hot dogs, pop, and TaeKwon-Do demonstrations.

The demonstrations include children's events, self-defense techniques, sparring, and board breaking. If you like what you see, you can join the club.

Contributed by Tara at Ruins Board Shop — There were over 200 spectators waiting and the energy was building by two o’clock for the skate and BMX contest to begin. Big clouds loomed overhead as we started with the BMX preliminaries. By three o’clock it was raining too much for the skateboard contest to go ahead. The skateboard portion of the contest was pushed ahead to noon on Monday, August 6.

The Rotary Club of Terrace sponsered Riverboat Days Wild Duck Race attracted several hundred people to the Skeena bridges Monday afternoon. A total of 4,500 rubber ducks were dropped, complements of Canadian Helicopters, at the north end of the Ferry Island and drifted in the river current toward the finish line for about half the length of the island.

At precisely 3 p.m. today, Clarence Michiel principal Bill Gook and vice-principal Lisa Blackstock opened the school doors releasing their charges, who have just completed a 10-month sentence, onto our city streets. The last student had exited the scene in a tad under eight seconds, giving us our Great 8 Second Escape. Why can't kids show this much enthusiasm when they're asked to take out the garbage or mow the lawn?

Ten Terrace and Thornhill firefighters were recently involved in a four-day, 32-hour IDHL (Imminent Danger to Health and LIfe in a Confined Space) rescue training program. A rescue of this type involves the rescue of an injured person in a confined space where there is little room to maneuver.
