FLOOD POTENTIAL UPDATE, MAY 28, 2002 - BULKLEY RIVER – 5/28/2002 2:17:15 PM

Skeena River at the Old Skeena Bridge. May 28, 2002 at 4 p.m.

The Bulkley River continues to run at very high levels. River levels on the Bulkley River at Houston have been stable for the past 15 hours, holding at about 7.39 metres. The Bulkley River at Smithers continues to rise slowly as does the Telkwa River. Warm daytime and overnight temperatures have kept the snowpack melting throughout the basin and this is sustaining high flows on the tributary rivers and on the mainstem of the Bulkley River.

With the mainstem of Bulkley River and the major tributaries continuing to run at very high levels, there is a considerable risk of the return of flooding problems on the larger rivers in the region. Any occurrence of heavy precipitation or sustained high temperatures could see any of these rivers reach flood stage very quickly. We will monitor the potential for flooding on an ongoing basis.

WEATHER

The current Environment Canada forecast for the Bulkley River Basin is showing widespread showers throughout the basin for the remainder of the week. Last night, precipitation accumulations in the basin were reported to be from 3 to 5 mm. Daytime and evening temperatures have been fairly warm and this is forecast to last at least through Wednesday. Overnight temperatures are forecast to drop towards the end of the week. No significant precipitation is in the forecast for the remainder of the week, however the 3 to 5 mm per day total precipitation, is likely to continue.

SNOWPACK

The middle and upper elevation snowpack is continuing to melt throughout the basin. Warm evening temperatures have sustained the snowmelt through the night creating a steady snowmelt runoff in the major tributaries of the basin. Smaller, low elevation watersheds are The Bulkley River continues to run at very high levels. Warm daytime and overnight temperatures have kept the snowpack melting throughout the basin and this is sustaining high flows on the tributary rivers and on the mainstem of the Bulkley River.

A further FLOOD POTENTIAL UPDATE for the Bulkley River will be issued tomorrow morning. For updates and other flood information, please see the PEP Website at www.pep.bc.ca
