Now the Nisga'a have built Wilp Sy'oon Wilderness Lodge where the Nass flows into the Pacific in an effort not only to attract anglers from around the globe to world-class salmon and steelhead fisheries, but also to a truly spectacular part of the planet, offering breathtaking vistas, natural hotsprings, and one of the richest cultures on this continent.

Lodge manager Ken Bejcar and his sport fishing staff are developing innovative angling programs, employing traditional methods for targeting salmon in tidal water, as well as applying lighter tackle and fly gear both on the ocean and in nearby rivers. He explains:

'Over the past couple of years we've been identifying the feeding patterns and the areas where salmon are holding as they move up the inlets toward the Nass and its tributaries. Keep in mind that is an uncharted sport fishery. Our guests rarely see another boat on the water-- and even then it usually a boat from a nearby village.'

This, of course, only enhances the Nass experience. On a warm July day last summer, Ken and his guests located a large school of coho and pink salmon congregating off the tip of a local island. They dropped a variety of lightweight artificial baits - such as Tomic Terminators, Rhys Davis Strip Holders, and bucktails - on mooching and fly rods. These were presented between six and 20 feet deep; some with four - six-ounce weights; others off Scotty Downriggers; motor-mooching and trolling in the lodge's 24-foot Boston Whaler. The group played salmon for almost three hours without so much as witnessing a boat.

'That's generally what it's like,' says Ken: 'When we find schools of salmon, we can use light gear and enjoy the thrill of it without having to concern ourselves with lots of other lines in the water around us.'

Wilp Sy'oon Lodge provides sport fishing and wilderness adventure packages, and will also facilitate custom and corporate needs. Air BC - a division of Air Canada - provides regular service to Prince Rupert from a variety of cities in the Pacific Northwest. Connections from Prince Rupert to Wilp Sy'oon are arranged by the Lodge.
