The Riverboat Days Youth Soccer Challenge 2001 offered excellent competition, with teams from Ketchikan, Alaska, and Guadalajara, Mexico, offering a truly international flavour.
The weather wasn't the greatest, but not really all that bad either. True soccer enthusiasts, however, don't really care about weather. Competition and fair play is the name of the game.
Whether true or not, spectators we spoke to believe there were more people watching the games than in past years. This was likely due to Team Mexico, an Under-12 Boys team from Guadalajara. Team Mexico "cleaned up" in early exhibition games they played around the Northwest. Prior to Challenge 2001, there was much speculation as to how the Terrace boys would do when faced with an apparently superior team.
The final game between these two teams offered excellent soccer, and a surprising performance by the Terrace Kermode's. Terrace led the scoring 1-0 in the first half, and made it 2-0 about halfway through the second half. Team Mexico rallied, though, and quickly tied the score. In the final minute of the game, Mexico scored to save their day with a 3-2 win.
