Skeena Valley Fall Fair

President's Message

“CRACK OPEN THE WONDERS…” is the theme for this year’s Skeena Valley Fall Fair.  The 32nd annual Fair is going to be held on Saturday, August 31 and Sunday, September 1, 2002.  The dedicated volunteers have already been hard at work organizing new events, exhibits, displays and competitions for all ages.

The Fair is going to kick off on Friday with the Skeena Valley Fall Fair Horse Show at the Thornhill Community Grounds.  There are a few changes to our Horse Show this year in that the registration for the Show will take place during our regular registration times.  These are on Saturday, August 24 and Monday, August 26 at the Lions compound at the fairgrounds.  Please check the Prize Book for times.  Mail entries are to be sent to the Skeena Valley Fall Fair, P.O. Box 495, Terrace, BC V8G 4B5.

A new event this year is an Ol’Time Fiddle contest being held at the Evangelical Free Church all day Friday, August 30.  There will be fiddlers from across Canada as they compete for the Championship prize of $1,000.00.  Admission to the competition is $5.00 per person (payable at the door).  Children 5 and under are free.  Come out and support this event as you may not get another opportunity to witness this level of fiddling!  The winners of all categories will be giving a gala performance at the Fairgrounds on Saturday.  For more information on the contest please click on our registration button.

We welcome ALCAN back this year as a “Partner of the Fair” corporate sponsor.  They will have the big Alcan tent back as well as the games everyone loved last year!  Thanks again for your support, Alcan!

Another new addition to our fair is the Terrace Farmer’s Market.  We are excited that they have decided to join us!  They will have an information booth and several vendors on hand for both Saturday and Sunday.

Speaking of Sunday… Please remember there are FREE buses running out to the fair grounds on Sunday.  There will be 2 runs out to the Fair Grounds in the morning and 2 back to town in the afternoon.  The schedule is printed in the Prize Book or call Farwest at 635-2666 for bus times and stops.  These buses are given to us free, courtesy of the City of Terrace, The Regional District of Kitimat / Stikine, and BC Transit.

Don’t forget that Sunday is also the day for our popular “KID’S FUN FAIR” We are going to have the usual races, watermelon eating contests, and the always entertaining tractor races (for the “big kids”).

There are some new competitions in the exhibition hall this year.  A sewn teddy bear – dressed and a unique birdhouse are just two competitions.  The winners of these 2 classes will be taken down to Vernon in October to compete provincially at the annual convention of the BC Association of Agricultural Fairs and Exhibitions.

This year there will be a special, “People’s Choice” award in memory of Charlie Holden.  Charlie was from the Smithers area and was a long time competitor at our Fair in the Heavy Horse Pull.  He was also one of the people instrumental in beginning the Heavy Horse Pull at our Fair.  He passed away late last year.  He will be missed.

There are all of the usual activities – Logger’s Sports and Pancake Breakfast, put on by the Downtown Lions Club, The Totem Saddle Club’s annual Gymkhana, the Heavy Horse Pull , the pet show and several demonstrations including dog agility, quilting and a farrier demo.

So come and join us on August 31 and September 1, 2002 to “CRACK OPEN THE WONDERS…” at the Skeena Valley Fall Fair.  Look at what the dedicated volunteers have worked 12 months to put together for our community.  Compete, be entertained, be educated and most of all, have FUN!

See you at the Fair.
